Reach International Beauty Market with Halal Products

The largest cosmetics market in the world in terms of number is without question the Halal market. With a huge Muslim population worldwide, Pew Research estimates that the number of Muslims will rise to 2.2 billion or 26.4% of the world’s population by 2030, and to 2.76 billion or 29.7% of the world's population by 2050, which is one-third of the world's total population.

Apparently, the majority of Muslims reside in the Asia-Pacific region, with Indonesia housing the largest Muslim population at 209 million, followed by India with 176 million. Having such a large market in close vicinity provides Thai entrepreneurs an advantage because they can conveniently export Halal products at a relatively low cost. Currently, Thailand has more than 100,000 products with Halal labels, making Thailand one of the countries with the most diverse Halal product labels in the world.

What is "Halal Standard"?

Halal standards are applicable to food, cosmetics, medical devices, medicines, and dietary supplements that are consumed by the Muslim population. To obtain Halal certification, the process will consist of strict guidelines for the raw materials used, machinery, equipment, manufacturing processes, locations, and transportation. The authority responsible for inspection and authorization of Halal standards in Thailand is each province’s Provincial Islamic Council, or the Central Islamic Council of Thailand for provinces that do not that their own provincial Islamic council.

Halal Cosmetics

Halal cosmetics must be made from ingredients permitted by the Halal standard. The criteria include prohibition of ingredients from pork, alcohol, animal fat, and others prohibited by Islamic principles. Most ingredients must come from nature, such as natural extracts or minerals. Therefore, the Halal standard is a symbol of hygiene and safety, which creates confidence for both Muslim and general consumers. Halal cosmetics that have been certified must clearly display the Halal symbol on the label to indicate that they are permitted for use according to Islamic principles.

Halal Dietary Supplements

Dietary supplements are becoming popular as consumers come from all ages and genders, and can be submitted for Halal certification. In addition, Halal-certified dietary supplements guarantee quality, hygiene, safety, and are free of contaminants. Therefore, dietary supplements that have been Halal certified can become strategic in the business plan to reach the Muslim market globally, as well as to the general consumers who are concerned about their health.

Entrepreneurs' Benefits from Halal-Certified Products:

  • Increased access to the Muslim market in Thailand and abroad.
  • The strict inspections at every production step help build confidence among both Muslim and general consumers.
  • Enhanced business competitiveness over competitors.
