Care for the Planet with Organic Beauty
The current trends in beauty and health revolve around the concept of being organic, which aligns with the overarching movement worldwide to reduce the use of toxic chemicals. The sourcing process of natural ingredients begin with choosing organically grown plants that have not been infested with chemicals in order to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, hence the name of the trend “Beauty Organic” that not only focuses on the beauty-enhancing aspect but also on the impact on the environment. In addition to beauty trends that highlight eco-friendly ingredients, the new generation of consumers are also supportive of packaging that is environmentally friendly, recyclable, or is made of recycled materials.
According to a research by Orbis, Creative Economy Agency, the global market for beauty industry during the 2019-2023 will reach 28 trillion baht or a growth of 7.14%, and the Chinese market will double this figure. Beauty Organic is the hottest trend and includes many types of products such as food, apparels, consumer goods, as well as cosmetics that are use naturally derived ingredients which are safe for the consumers and use biodegradable or recyclable packaging that is environmentally friendly.
What is Organic Beauty?
Organic Beauty not only helps enhance beauty and skin condition, it is also good for the planet. However, many people may still wonder what constitutes organic skincare or cosmetics, and whether they differ from natural cosmetics. The answer is that organic cosmetics have no additives or chemicals, or less than 10% of chemicals at most. The production or cultivation process must also be organic in nature without the use of chemicals throughout the supply chain, including the ingredient cultivation methods, harvesting, packaging, transportation, processing, and application. Most importantly, they must be certified by authorized organizations while natural skincare just uses natural ingredients that may not be cultivated organically. There are many symbols that indicate whether the products use organic ingredients such as the ECOCERT symbol from France that is issued to products or spas that meet the specified standard. Ingredients which are included in the ECOCERT products need to come from at least 95% natural origin and only from organic farms. The plantations must not have used fertilizers in the past three years or more. Additionally, the packaging must be environmentally friendly.
Organic cosmetics not only help nourish the skin to be naturally healthy, they also reduce allergies from chemicals because this type of cosmetics does not contain harmful chemicals such as parabens (preservatives), SLS (surfactants) and mineral oil (substances derived from petroleum refining) which can cause cancer if accumulated in the skin for an extended period of time. The organic approach corresponds to the needs of the new generation as reported by Mintel Reports Thailand that Gen Z values sustainability and social wellness. They also expect their values to be reflected in the brands they choose to buy, with 76% putting more effort into saving the environment and about 25% preferring products that are more sustainable for the environment. It shows that the modern consumers make decision based on the environment more than just the products’ benefits.
Nowadays, there are several brands of organic skincare. Many of them are new brands with eco-friendly missions such as:
- True Botanicals, a brand of sustainable skincare from San Francisco that uses organic ingredients without any toxic chemicals. Their products can be used by consumers of all sky types, even those with acne-prone skin, sensitive skin, or pregnant women. The brand received the Best of Beauty award from a reputable magazine.
- 100% PURE, is as pure as its name suggests because its organic products have been certified by the USDA, an organic standard in the United States. The products are gentle to the skin, do not cause pollutions, and are 100% committed to reduce carbon footprint with recycled and recyclable packaging.
- Weleda from Switzerland has been certified organic without parabens, synthetic substances, fragrances or any harmful chemicals, so they are as wholesome to the skin as to the environment.
